It stems from an inner recognition of the structure that is creation, of a co-existence between humankind and nature in the natural order of things.
Life for humankind, animal and nature is sustained through a never ending cycle of give and take of substances, and healthy life by the maintenance of balance in this cycle.
To live sustainably therefore, is not a trend, a policy position or a technical discipline. It is a manner of being. It begins with a recognition that we live within an ordered universe; one governed by lawfulness and unseen hands that predate us, sustain us and will outlive us.
Nature itself bears witness to this in its regularity; days and nights flow into each order in a never ending cycle, as do seasons. Life emerges in humans, plants and animal alike. We witness a maturing, aging and remerging, nothing is random, everything is ordered, connected, and regular.
To live sustainably therefore is to awaken to the consciousness of this order, for it grinds on unceasingly, incorruptibly, offering beauty as it demands balance. The balance is achieved only through knowledge, at the core of which is a necessary humility that acknowledges that humans are participants in Creation and not its masters.
At its essence, Sustainable Living is about balance between humankind and nature. When this balance is observed, life flourishes, but when it is ignored, spiritual, environmental and social disorder inevitably follows.
